All students are eligible for private music instruction. Instruction is available for piano, voice, guitar, trumpet, bass (both classical and jazz), cello, violin, viola, flute, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, and world percussion. Lessons are taught by Music Program faculty and adjunct professors.

About Music Lessons

Lessons can be taken for either one or two credits or audited (no credit). In order to receive credit, the student must be registered with the Registrar’s Office. Lessons can only be registered with an add/drop form. There is no online registration for private music lessons. Registration for private lessons must be completed by the end of the drop/add period.

The fee for private music lessons is in addition to regular tuition. There are no free music lessons. There are two ways to pay for private music lessons.

The first way to pay for private music lessons is to take the lessons for credit. If taking private music lessons for credit, you must pay through the College. In order to receive credit for private music lessons, the student must register the lessons with the Registrar’s office AND the student must be enrolled in a music ensemble, performance workshop, or the equivalent, to be determined by the instructor. The ensemble can be taken for 1 or 2 credits or can be audited. Students taking lessons for 1 or 2 credits pay a nominal lab fee of $250 per semester for a total of 12 lessons (approximately $20.83 per lesson) to the College. Students receive a maximum of 12 lessons per semester. If students are taking more than one lesson, the student must also be enrolled in another ensemble to receive the lesson rate of $250 per semester.

The second way to pay for private music lessons is to audit the lessons. If private lessons are audited (no credit), a fee is mutually agreed upon by the student and the instructor. The student pays the instructor directly. Audited lessons will not appear in the student’s registration or on the transcript, and they do not need to be registered.

A normal lesson is one hour, once a week. It may be slightly shorter or longer by agreement with your teacher. Teachers are required to reschedule lessons that they have to miss. You are required to give teachers advance notice of lessons you cannot make. They may reschedule at their discretion; they are not required to do so.
